Bugs

Welcome to Bug Week!

This week, find the bugs in the sensory play, make your own bugs and decorate a butterfly.

Book and Rhyme of the Week

It's bug week, so how could our book of the week be anything apart from the fantastic Superworm! Although if you're after an out and about idea, why not buy this book and head out for some bug spotting? And theme the week further with this song.

Sensory Play

Keep things simple with this week's sensory box! All we used was a base of shredded paper which had come in a delivery. Then we added some plastic bugs we already had to the paper for our toddler to fish out.

We have a set of bugs similar to this one, but any set will do. If you don't have bugs then just use any animal figures you have your toddler won't care.

Arts and Crafts

Download the bugs file below and colour in, cut and stick the paper to make your own ladybird and butterfly finger puppet with your toddler!

Active Play

Get a piece of cardboard (the thicker the better) and draw out a basic butterfly shape on it. Cut it out and stick sticky back plastic to one side of it, so the middle bit becomes sticky. Then go outside with your toddler and collect leaves, petals and flowers (daisies are starting to appear at this time of year) to make your own butterfly.

If you don't have sticky back plastic then just use some sellotape!

Your Printables for this Week

We might have got a bit carried away with printables for this week!

So this week, print off the file to make your own ladybird/ladybug and butterfly with your toddler. AND also download your free 6 page bug themed file - with the butterfly lifecycle, matching games and tracing sheets to complete as well.

What You'll Need for Next Week's Theme

Next week you'll need:

  • Rice
  • Some green food colouring (if you can face dying the rice - we had some left over from the hit rainbow week)
  • Toy carrots if you have them (or pasta dyed orange if not!)
  • A little bit of bubble wrap
